Mechanical Engineering Professor Selected for NAE Symposium

Dirk Schaefer, assistant professor in the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia TechDr. Dirk Schaefer, an assistant professor in the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering (ME), will join 48 of the nation’s brightest young engineering researchers and educators who have been selected to take part in an inaugural symposium being sponsored by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). The NAE symposium, titled “Frontiers of Engineering Education” will enable the attendees to share ideas and best practices, as well as innovations in teaching and learning.

Chosen by Peers

Schaefer, who is on the ME faculty at the GT-Savannah campus, was selected along with other top engineering faculty members in the first half of their careers who are developing and implementing innovative educational approaches in a variety of disciplines. The participants were nominated by fellow engineers and chosen from a highly competitive pool of applicants. Schaefer, who came to Georgia Tech in 2006, has focused his research on the strategic design of engineering education including virtual learning environments and remotely/robotically controlled physical laboratory exercises for distance learning settings.

Benefit to Georgia Tech

The program will focus on effective ways to ensure that students learn the engineering fundamentals, the expanding knowledge base of new technology, and the skills necessary to be an effective engineer or engineering researcher. According to Dr. Don Giddens, Dean of the College of Engineering, “Tech has long been a leader in engineering education. Having Dirk Schaefer as part of this symposium, will not only allow him to share with his colleagues some of the great things we have been doing on our campus, but bring back new and exciting ideas on how best to educate the engineers of tomorrow.”
