High Fives for COE Students

Medina ,  ME Student

Mechanical engineering (ME) graduate student, Jose F. Medina, was recently awarded a 2009 Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship. Medina’s research is in the area of alternative energy and renewable energy. He is a member of Pi Tau Sigma, ME Honor Society, as well as Tau Beta Pi, the Engineering Honor Society.  The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation was established in 2000 and is dedicated to supporting individuals of exceptional promise – those who work hard, stay focused, and defy the stereotype that poverty precludes high achievement.

Rester, CEE Student

Environmental engineering (CEE) undergraduate student, Elyse Rester, was featured in the magazine, Engineering: Go For It, which is published by the American Society for Engineering Education.  In the section “Student Voices”, Rester talks about her plans following graduation which include working to get basic sanitation and clean water to rural areas in developing countries.  Rester, a member of Engineering Students Without Borders, is a senior at Tech. Kolambkar, BIOE Student

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation recently named Yash Kolambkar, Bioengineering, as one of 13 leading scientific postdoctoral researchers to become the first class of Kauffman Postdoctoral Fellows. The yearlong fellowship program will use entrepreneurship education and mentorship to equip the Fellows to commercialize their scientific discoveries. Kolambkar is a skilled researcher in the biomedical field with a strong focus on translation of research ideas into commercially viable products. Kolambkar is a co-founder of Ketal Biomedical Inc., an early stage drug delivery company, spun out from research performed at Georgia Tech and Emory University. In addition to providing a salary and benefits to support the Fellows' research over the course of the yearlong fellowship, the Kauffman Foundation has matched each Fellow with an academic advisor to mentor him/her on matters beyond research, and an experienced investor or corporate leader to serve as a business mentor. During the Fellowship year, each Fellow also will undertake an industry internship suited to his or her research interests and objectives.

Beaver, MSE Student, McAnuff & Patel, BME Students

Three COE students were named 2009 Beckman Foundation Undergraduate Scholars. Kelsey Beaver (Materials Science and Engineering), and Kadija McAnuff and Rishi Patel (Biomedical Engineering) will receive support from the Beckman Foundation to engage in full-time research for two summers, and part-time research during the academic year. Along with a stipend, a travel award is given to each student to present at two technical conferences, and the students are invited to participate in the Beckman Foundation Scholars conference which is held in the summer.
