The ECE Outreach Award is presented to a member of the academic faculty for leadership and/or significant participation in outreach activities to interest and involve K-12 students in engineering, to increase participation of women and under-represented minorities in engineering, and/or to recruit such students to the School of ECE.

May has been on the ECE faculty since 1991. He is the founder of the Summer Undergraduate Research in Engineering/Science (SURE) Program, which is designed to attract talented minority students into graduate school. Since its inception in 1992, 76 percent of SURE participants have continued on to graduate school in engineering and science, with 50 percent of those deciding to attend Georgia Tech.

He also founded and co-directed the Facilitating Academic Careers in Engineering and Science (FACES) program, which encourages minority graduate students to pursue engineering and science careers in academia. During its 15-year existence, more than 400 students earned doctorates in STEM fields. Last fall, FACES transitioned into the new Sloan-funded University Center of Exemplary Mentoring program.
