College of Engineering Leads the Nation in Doctoral Degrees

Data recently released from the National Science Foundation has shown that the College of Engineering at Georgia Tech leads in the nation in the production of doctoral degrees. The report for PhD degrees awarded in 2014 (most recent data available) showed that out of 9,568 doctoral engineering degrees granted – 359 were from Georgia Tech, followed by MIT, Purdue, the University of Michigan, and Stanford.

Tech also awarded the most doctoral degrees in both aerospace engineering and chemical engineering. In addition, Georgia Tech was number two in electrical engineering PhD degrees; number three in mechanical engineering doctoral degrees; and number three in materials engineering PhD degrees awarded during 2014.

Tech’s School of Aerospace Engineering had 46 doctoral degree recipients in 2014, approximately 12% of the nation’s production. The School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Tech awarded 35 PhD degrees for 3.5% of the nation’s total.
