What is the Commencement Policy Update to Early and Late Walks?
Early and late walks are granted on a case-by-case basis as space allows. Students must apply by the current semester's withdrawal deadline. Applications for Fall 2025 will open the week of Sept. 2. Applications for the Spring 2026 ceremony will open in late January. For early and late walk applications, please visit the official institute commencement website.
Beginning in Fall 2026, students will no longer be able to request to walk one semester early. Late walks will be reserved for unforeseen hardship situations that prevent the graduate from attending the ceremony. View the policy.
My family is unable to attend my ceremony. Can I apply for a late walk?
Late walks are reserved for unforeseen hardships that prevent the graduate from attending. We understand the importance of having your family, friends, and supporters at your ceremony. To provide adequate venue space and support for our current graduates each semester, however, late walks are limited to situations in which the graduate is unable to attend.
All ceremonies are livestreamed, so your family and loved ones can watch your special moment as it happens, even if they aren’t able to be there in person.
Can summer graduates apply for early walk?
For us to provide adequate venue space and support for our current graduates each semester, summer graduates will no longer have the option to participate a semester early in Spring Commencement.

You are invited to attend the Institute's ceremony at 9 a.m. in Bobby Dodd Stadium. Following this, you also are invited to participate in the College ceremony at 11:30 a.m., where you can walk across the stage and shake the Dean's hand.
