The Pathbreakers Fellowship Program is an essential effort to help fulfill the Institute’s strategic plan goal of expanding access. The Pathbreakers Fellows Program provides exceptional STEM Ph.D. students with an opportunity to expand their mentoring network, enhance professional skills, and receive additional financial support during their graduate studies.

Becoming a Resilient Scientist

The interdisciplinary bioengineering program and Project ENGAGES are offering a program developed by the NIH OITE office for graduate students to help students develop the confidence and resilience to navigate challenging situations in school, work, and life. A small group of 12-15 graduate students will meet six times during the fall or spring semester.

Discussion group meetings will cover:

  • Wellness and resilience
  • Cognitive distortions, imposter fears, and stereotype threat
  • Emotional intelligence and emotion in the workplace
  • Self-advocacy and assertiveness for scientists
  • Developing feedback resilience
  • Maximizing mentoring relationships

  • Increase your resilience with a specific focus on academic and research environments
  • Develop your interpersonal and emotional intelligence skills needed for success

Provide a place for trainees to cultivate skills and discuss:

  • Resilience strategies learned in the lectures
  • Integrating strategies learned into school, work and life
  • Managing life, career, research, and school stress in a facilitated setting

Expectations:

  1. Required attendance at six virtual group meetings (1 hour each)
  2. Prior to the group meeting, watch the provided webinar asynchronously (2 hours each)
  3. Complete surveys to facilitate evaluation of this curriculum
