Materials science and engineering (MSE) focuses on the design, selection, and development of materials. It is a field that deals with “stuff” -- the metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites that surround us. It looks beyond the question of what materials these things are currently made from and imagines what they should be made from. From there, it explores whether structures can be modified to alter the properties and design materials to achieve better performance for specific applications. MSE at Georgia Tech is one of the largest materials programs in the nation, and its students students and faculty are exploring alternative energy sources, developing stronger and lighter materials, creating novel electronic devices, developing new materials for medical implants and more.
