Tech Tower

Over 500 people attended the 2010 Women in Engineering Awards Banquet held at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center on March 18th.  One hundred and twenty scholarships, totaling over $140,000 were awarded to deserving female undergraduate engineering students.  In the midst of this an economic downturn, the amount of scholarships surprisingly increased from $120,000 in 2009 to over $140,000 this year.

Keynote Address from the President

President Peterson was the keynote speaker for the program.  This is the first time the President has had the opportunity attend this auspicious event.  In his remarks, Peterson noted the outstanding accomplishments the current female students, female GT alumnae and women in engineering nationally.

Faculty Excellence and Outstanding Mentor Awards

In addition to the scholarships, awards were given for faculty excellence and outstanding mentoring.

The recipients of the Faculty Excellence Awards:Ken Gall from the School of Material Science and Engineering, Sue Ann Bidstrup Allen from the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Ali Adibi from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

The Shell Mentoring Award recipients:David Akhigbe (ECE), Corey Boone (Mgt.), Courtney Brown (ChBE), and Serena Grobani (ISyE)

The Caterpillar Mentoring Award recipients:Swathi Narayanaswamy (ISyE), Payal Shah, Stuart Smith (Envr), Stephanie Stout (AE), and Jemat Taiwo (ChBE)

Tribute to Dr. Philobos

The evening concluded with a tribute to Mahera “Mimi” Philobos, the director of the Women in Engineering program.  Six students, who were recipients of the Pay It Forward Scholarships, a program founded by Dr. Philobos and her husband, Dr. Arian Armanios, expressed their gratitude for the guidance, support and friendship Dr. Philobos provided.  The standing ovation at the close of the program summed up the reactions and feelings of the audience not only about the evening, but the Women in Engineering Program.
