Aerospace Engineering alumnus, Rick Cavallaro, BSAE’84, will go for the record books in late June as he attempts a new wind-powered vehicle achievement. Cavallaro has built a vehicle, powered only by the wind, which goes directly downwind at more than twice the speed of wind. The record-breaking runs will be attempted at Smith Creek, Nevada in early July. If weather/surface conditions dictate, the effort may be moved south to the El Mirage lake bed in Southern California the following week.

The North American Land Sailing Association (NALSA - nalsa.org) will oversee the attempt. Technical guru and former land speed record holder, Bob Dill, will be the point person for NALSA along with other NALSA board members as observers. Cavallaro’s vehicle is sponsored by Google and Joby Energy.
