This fall semester there was a joint class of biomedical engineering (BME) capstone design and mechanical engineering (ME) capstone design students working in 5 teams on clinically significant projects. About 40 teams presented their capstone projects in the Marcus Nanotechnology Building on December 9th. Team project results and presentations were rated on five criteria by 34 judges from industry and faculty representatives.

The AutoRexis intra-disciplinary BME-ME team won the $500 top prize at the Capstone Design expo. AutoRexis is a surgical instrument to perform capsulothexis during cataract surgery. BME students: Chris Giardina, Khaled Kashlan, Rebeca Bowden, Jorge Bara; ME students: Kanitha Kim and Shane Saunders. Dr. Timothy Johnson at the Emory School of Medicine was clinical advisor. Professors Franklin Bost (BME) and Craig Forest (ME) were class instructors for the intra-disciplinary teams.
