Founded in 1975, NSBE now includes more than 394 College, Pre-College, and Technical Professional/Alumni chapters in the United States and abroad. NSBE’s mission is "to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community."
Gary S. May, alumnus, professor and former chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was appointed as the next dean of Georgia Tech’s College of Engineering, effective July 1. As dean, May is responsible for directing the nation’s largest engineering program, one that enrolls nearly 60 percent of Georgia Tech’s student body and is home to about half of its tenured and tenure-track faculty.
The Georgia Tech Society of Black Engineers (G.T.S.B.E) was founded in 1976, a year after the National Society of Black Engineers (N.S.B.E) was established.Since its beginnings, G.T.S.B.E has grown to become one of the largest chapters within the organization, with membership numbers as high as 250. The chapter has had the privilege of receiving numerous honors and accolades, including both the Regional and National Distinguished Chapter of the Year Award. It serves as a professional, social and cultural outlet for the students at the Georgia Institute of Technology, while serving as a voice for the Black population on campus. This chapter's aim is to uphold the mission of N.S.B.E; to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers, who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.
