The George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering is pleased to announce that Dr. Andrés J. García, professor, has been awarded the 2012 Clemson Award for Basic Research from the Society for Biomaterials, on behalf of Clemson University.

Each year, the Society for Biomaterials solicits nominations for outstanding work in areas of Applied Research and Basic Research. The award is given to someone who has contributed to the basic knowledge and understanding of the interaction of materials with tissue. The contribution may employ a new theoretical concept, new material development or original study of the functioning or interactions of a material in the biological environment.

Dr. García began his career at Georgia Tech in 1998 as an assistant professor. Prior to this, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Microbiology at the School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. His research at Georgia Tech centers on cellular and tissue engineering.

Dr. García received his doctoral degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1996. He was elected to the grade of Fellow in 2007 by the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering.
