A bicycle-sharing program led by a Georgia Tech engineering graduate is offering novel ways to get around campus and Atlanta, according to a recent article in TechCrunch.

ViaCycle is a startup co-founded by Kyle Azevedo, who works as viaCycle’s CEO and has a master’s degree from the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering.

The company is similar to Zipcar in that it allows users to rent transportation for a short period. But instead of cars, ViaCycle boasts bikes equipped with battery packs and GPS systems, the article said.

ViaCycle is backed by the prestigious Y Combinator, which provides seed money for startups. Y Combinator has funded well-known companies like Airbnb, the website that connects travelers with people seeking to rent their homes.

Several other members of the viaCycle team also attended CoE. The company is currently testing its program on Tech’s campus.

Students, faculty and staff members can register for a free basic membership with viaCycle at https://gt.viacycle.com/. (For a monthly fee, an upgraded membership adds additional benefits.)

Members rent bicycles from anywhere they’re stored around Tech’s campus, and bicycles can be returned to any viaCycle location. A simple text message unlocks a bike, and they’re free for at least the first half hour.

This fall, TechCrunch reported, viaCycle will be coming to George Mason University’s campus as well as San Francisco.
