Tech Tower

Want to build a robot, design an off-road vehicle or work with solar cars? There’s a Georgia Tech club waiting for you, and you could discover it this Friday.

The Student Competition Center is hosting an open house from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, giving students a chance to learn about its various organizations. The center houses Tech’s competitive engineering groups, and no RSVP is required to attend.

Students who stop by the open house, taking place in the center’s main shop area, will be treated to pizza and drinks. Door prizes will also be available, and a free shuttle will ferry students from the MRDC to the center, located at 575 14th St.

Clubs are seeking new members of all ages and experience levels. RoboJackets, a group that constructs robots for competition, requires no previous experience in robotics. The club counts students, faculty and alumni among its members. Several clubs that design and build cars will also be present.

Most participants in Solar Jackets hail from the College of Engineering, but students of all majors and experience levels are welcome. Solar Jackets members build solar- and electricity-powered cars for competition, including a racer fueled entirely by the sun. HyTech Racing, meanwhile, manufactures a Formula hybrid-style race car each year, and the group competes in the Formula Hybrid International Competition at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Other clubs appearing at the open house will include GT Off-Road and Wreck Racing.
