Over the last two years, I have been reading an 18 volume series of historical books titled “A General History and Collection of Voyages and Travels - Arranged in systematic order: Forming a Complete History of the Origin and Progress of Navigation, Discovery and Commerce, by Sea and Land, from the earliest Ages to the Present Time” which were written by Robert Kerr in 1824 that deal with discovery and exploration and which are scanned and published for free as part of the Gutenberg project.

The book that got me interested and I really enjoyed was “The Memoirs of the Conquistador Bernal Diaz del Castillo” written by Bernal Diaz del Castillo in 1568. It is the true eyewitness account from Bernal Diaz del Castillo who went as a young man in 1519 with Cortes to Mexico and helped defeat the Aztec empire. He was one of the few original “conquistadores” to survive the conquest. It is an amazing story and really interesting reading. Highly recommended.

You can find all of these for free on www.gutenberg.org
